We Lost. But Here’s My Favorite Tweet Over the Last 24 Hours

UTA vs Texas StateThe Georgia State Panthers, coached by the great Ron Hunter, executed their successful game plan of strong defense and making a lot of shots from long range to defeat the UT-Arlington Mavericks 73-64 in the Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Championship Game in New Orleans.

UTA lead early, but about halfway through the first half into the second half, UTA went like 14 or 15 minutes I think without making a field goal, missing 23 consecutive attempts. If the Mavs make even 25% of those (let’s say 5 or 6, even without a 3-pointer or and-one), there’s another 10-12 points for the Mavs and we probably have a very good chance win the game.

Hopefully we’ll get a Sunday afternoon rematch with the Panthers in March of 2020.

Thanks so much for reading my blog this season and I’ll be posting occasionally during the off-season as we learn about games on next year’s schedule and any other UTA-related news that might be interesting.

So in wrapping up this season, I thought this tweet summed up 2018-2019 very well–so much better than I could have.

UTA Coach Ogden Named Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, Conference Tournament Update

t20181106_190117_HDRWhat a great job first-year UT Arlington men’s basketball coach Chris Ogden has done. Replaced a popular coach. A roster of players that hadn’t played together before for the most part. One of the nation’s toughest non-conference schedules. After a 4-11 start, team went on a 12-4 run to finish the season at 16-15. Continue reading

Mavs Unstoppable in Nationally Televised Game; Coach Cross Gets 150th Victory

UTAfireworks20131115_214857HUGE WIN!!!!
UTA 84, at Louisiana-Lafayette 69

The Mavs (13-9, 7-5) got off to a slow start and fell behind ULL (13-11, 7-6) early at 18-7 with 13:43 left in the first half. But, they played a very solid next 10 minutes or so to only be down by 4 at halftime (45-41), and then simply dominated the second half, outscoring ULL 43-24 in the second half to beat a good LA-Lafayette team 84-69 in a game televised on ESPN2.

Attacking the paint seemingly every time down the court in the final 20:00, it was a lot of layups and free throws for UTA for much of the second half.  It was fun to watch and a great win. Continue reading

Mavs Now 12-7 after Road Trip Sweep

UTAfireworks20131115_214857UTA Mavs have played well the last two weeks. Let’s look at how they’ve done and check out the conference standings.

Last time I posted…two weeks ago, the Mavs had just demolished Arkansas State by 27 points in Arlington to put their record at 9-6 overall, 3-2 in conference play with tough games coming up at Georgia State, at home vs. Texas State and back on the road at then-conference leader UL-Monroe and always tough-at-home UALR.

Final Game Tonight Before Conference Tournament

So here we are, the Mavs playing for a three game winning streak, building some momentum going into the final day of play before the conference tournament. With a big come from behind win over WKU, having to play well to defend a lead against Troy, now a game against a South Alabama on the road…the Mavs are around the .500 mark in conference play, similar to 2007-2008…could this be a repeat of the NCAA tournament year?

At this point in 2007-2008, the Mavs were 18-10, 7-8 going into their final conference game against Texas State, a game which they would lose before defeating Lamar by 6, Sam Houston State by 6 and Nortwestern State by 3 in the Southland Conference tournament in Katy, TX to earn a berth into the NCAA tournament.

UTA won in double overtime thursday night…
