Week 3: Mavs Split 2 Games With Ragin’ Cajuns


Mavs are at .500 on the season and are in a three-way tie for third in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference.

Game 1 – Friday – uta 91, Louisiana 86

A fast-paced, high scoring game against a tall, athletic Louisiana team. UTA was again without several key players due to injury (David Azore, Nicolas Elame and Lazaro Rojas).

  • Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu had 6 blocks in 20 minutes while committing only 1 foul.
  • Free throw shooting continues to be stellar for the Mavs. UTA was 24-28 last night. The Mavs had a lot of success driving it to the basket and either getting layups, or drawing fouls, or both.
  • Shahada Wells scored 31 on 9-18 FG, including 3-5 from outside and 10-11 free throws.
  • Another wild finish: After leading by 4 at halftime, the Mavs lead by 13 with 11:06 left. The Ragin’ Cajuns would go on a 12-3 run over about a 5 minute span, cutting the Mavs’ lead down to 2 with just 3:41 remaining (72-70). The teams combined to score a whopping 31 points in the final 3 minutes, as the Ragin’ Cajuns made 3 3-pointers to keep the game within 2 possessions the rest of the way. Louisiana’s Devin Butts made a jumper to cut the lead down to just 3 with 10 seconds left, but 2 free throws by Wells put the Mavs up by 5 with 6 seconds left to win the game.

Game 2 – Friday – uta 51, Louisiana 68

UTA was again without several key players due to injury (David Azore, Nicolas Elame and Lazaro Rojas). Louisiana made a lot of shots early and played great defense to establish a quick 23-10 lead 10 minutes into the game. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ biggest lead of the game was 25 at 42-17 with 3:33 remaining in the first half. UTA got the deficit down to 9 at 50-41 with 11:20 remaining, and then Louisiana went on a 15-4 run to get the lead back to 20 at 65-45.
